Kalinga TV,  Achyuta faces defamation charges

BHUBANESWAR: A city court issued notice over defamation charge to controversial philanthropist and businessman Achyuta Samanta and his Kalinga TV. The court restrained for publication of any defamatory content on the social activists with ulterior motive.

Acting on a civil suit filed by leading woman activist Sanjukata Panigrahi, a civil court of city’s senior division has issued notice and directed to appear before him and two others on 17th September 2017.

Speaking to Headlines Everyday, the woman activist  Panigrahi said, Achyuta Samant and his KalingaTV had engaged in transmitting defamatory, false and malicious content to protect Achyut’s misdeeds.

Achyuta Samanta owned Kalinga TV is a threat to democracy, and it is being used to protect the crimes committed by him and aides, noted RTI activist Pradip Pradhan lamented.

Headlines Everyday tried to contact Achyuta Samanta over pone, but he choosed not to reply.

It is to be noted Samanta is engaged in land grabbing in city and CAG has exposed it. Subsequently, a series of order passed by National Green Tribunal for restoring forest land.

Samanta uses his TV to defame social activists and whistleblowers.

The press,  media so also every citizen has got freedom of right of expression of the facts which are true or which are bonafide and fair comments but I can no person way be extended to defame a person in publishing/teleasting/circulating the defamatory news item with malice and ulterior motive, the court observed.

Kalinga TV’s Soumyajit Patnaik and Himashy Sekhar Khatua are also issued notice to appear on 17th September 2017.

For the petitioner, Senior Advocate Sivananda Ray appeared.
