Mahanadi water row: 3000 Cong workers detained

BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Congress chief Prasad Harichandan on Tuesday claimed that the statewide bandh on Mahanadi water dispute was peaceful and successful.

Harichandan lamented the State government and BJP, ‘Even though the state government attempted to foil the bandh, people extended their support to the cause making it successful. I thank people of Odisha for their support’.

He said the support of the people across the state was spontaneous and the workers of the party come together to make it a success. He alleged that though the congress workers were engaged in peaceful picketing, around 3,000 Congress activists were detained as per ruling party’s instruction.

Leader of opposition Narasingh Mishra, who was convened the all party meeting for Mahanadi water, thanked the people for their support to the dawn-to-dusk shutdown across the state. He said the Chhattisgarh and Odisha governments are responsible for the Mahanadi water disputes.

Political analysts are in view that Mahanadi water issue brings Congress and other opposition parties an opportunity to show-up their existence, may be an alarm for Naveen, who handled the issue politically to avoid his failure and continuous corruption charges, including against his cabinet colleagues, who are under CBI scanner.
